Everybody needs a slinky black dress in their wardrobe. These dresses can be dressed up for parties or worn in a more casual style for everyday wear. But as Fabric Godmother, we can’t just give you a plain black dress project; it has to have a twist.

So, we have combined the stunning black base fabric Aurora Ecovero Viscose Satin from our Rosalia collection with the Les Perlenes Cove Dress.

About the fabric:

You may have already seen this fabric, Aurora Ecovero Viscose Satin, from our Rosalia collection, part of our recent Autumn Winter collection.

Roses are always gorgeous; whether you prefer dramatic or demure, large-scale roses capture both with style.

This beautiful opulent rose design is printed onto the highest-quality ECOVERO™ satin dressmaking fabric. The rose, fashion’s latest muse, beautifully captures the romance woven into this collection.

Aurora Viscose ECOVERO™ Satin—Black is a medium-weight, opaque dressmaking fabric. It has plenty of fluid movement, drape, and a gorgeous high shine, making it ideal for bias-cut sewing.

This fabric would also work well for:

Fabric Godmother Peony dress

Tessuti - Evie Bias Skirt

True Bias - Ogden Cami size range 4-22 or 18-34

Nina Lee - Portobello Trousers size range HIP 33.5" - 47.5" or HIP 45" - 57"

About the pattern:

The Cove is THE ultimate slip dress pattern. It comes with a sleeveless, short, and long sleeve option, as well as 2 different lengths, making it a dress for every season! The skirt is also cut on the bias, giving the dress a lot of drapes and adding extra stretch for comfort.

We have included enough fabric to make the full length long sleeve version.

About your gift:

We have included the ultimate unpicker as your gift this month. The rubberised handle is super comfortable to hold, as we often end up spending longer than we like unpicking! The rubberised end is also great for brushing away loose threads and tidying up your sewing space. Colours may vary.

Josie’s sewing Notes:

  • Note that the cutting and sewing lines are shown in pattern. Cut the darker line. The pale grey line is the sewing line.
  • I made size E graded to G at the hips.
  • Added to 20cm length, for reference I am 5’10”
  • Use fine sharp pins and microtext needles.
  • Pin together the front bodice and lining when doing the gathering stitches to ensure they are aligned. (It is easiest to pin while wearing)
  • As it is bias cut, let it hang before hemming, as the fabric will drop.
  • The centre front is tricky. So, it helps to follow instructions to baste.

  • For the sleeve hem, I sewed a line at 7mm and pressed along the stitching. Then, I trimmed and pressed along the stitch line. Then, I turned again and sewed at 3mm.

  • For the skirt hem, I overlocked, then turned it up once (5mm) and sewed.
