Description

Polaris is an off-shoulder peasant top pattern with gathers on neckline and arms. Gathers are made using elastic casings, and an optional bow can be added on front. Inspired from a vintage cut from the 1940s, it features an underarm gusset: this is how this kind of tops were constructed back in the time in the 19th century when women still wore corsets. Nowadays you can see many similar-looking tops without this specific technique.

Choose a crisp shirting or soft crepe to play on the different textures and volumes!

Difficulty:

2/5 – very easy thanks to the sew-along video. You can find this video in the French Poetry tutorials section!

Sizing:

Choose your size as per the measurements below if you want a lot of gathers, or size down if you want your top to be closer to the body. I advise to size down if the drape of your fabric is quite stiff or «puffy». You can judge by the pictures here: I made the cream top in my regular size, and the blue striped top is 2 sizes smaller. Size range: 2 to 16 – tested up to size 14.

Available sizes:

2 to 16

Fabric choice:

Length: with 60’’ (150cm) wide fabrics, you will need 2 yards (or 2 meters). with 44’’ – 45’’ (115cm) fabrics, you will need 2.5 yards (or 2.5 meters).
Fabric choice: lightweight but opaque fabrics: cotton lawn (liberty…), shirting, viscose or polyester or silk crepe, twill, challis… don’t try to add a lining, that would make a super puffy/balloony top.

You will need:

2 to 3 yards (3m) of 0.5cm wide elastic, matching thread for your fabric, scissors, pins, a marking pen, a machine needle that fits your fabric type, a small safety pin.

Sizing:

This pattern is offered in sizes 2 to 16 according to the body measurements below.

Size 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16

    Lovely top

Posted by Elaine on 27th Jul 2020

I made this top in the white neon embroidered cotton lawn fabric, and it came out beautifully. BUT the pattern instructions are incredibly confusing and some steps are not included. I figured it out by watching the YouTube tutorial but I feel I shouldn’t have had to do that.. There are no finished garment measurements available, I made this in my usual size as per the measurements in the patten and I could easily have sized down by 2 sizes.
