The Jumpsuit

A jumpsuit is a simply a single garment that covers the legs. Traditionally, the arms were also covered but more modern versions do not all have sleeves.

Not to be confused with the other workwear staple, the dungarees, designed by Levi Strauss in the 1890s. These featured a pair of trousers or jeans with a bib to protect the workers chest.

In the 1930's, Elsa Schiaparelli launched fashion's first jumpsuit. Though it certainly caught the eye of the fashion crowd, it wasn't until later in the century that wearing a jumpsuit become popular.

The 70's all in one discos outfits in either spangly elastane or solid denim(not stretch denim back then) were de rigueur. Halston and Yves Saint Laurent led the way in these designs.

Once again in the 80's, jumpsuits were in fashion but this time they were in pastel hues with shapes more akin to the original jumpsuits. Just look at any vintage sewing pattern collection for some fantastic examples of these!

After briefly falling off the fashion circuits for a few years, jumpsuits have once again earnt their place in our everyday wardrobes. From modern boiler suits to slouchy linen jumpsuits, we all have embraced the easy to wear jumpsuit!
