The Great British Sewing Bee - Series 8 Episode 6

Posted by Phoebe on 10th Jun 2022

This week was music week on the GBSB! The contestants had to make a variety of garments inspired by different genres and artists, testing both their creativity and skills!

In the pattern challenge we saw contestants racing against the clock to make parkas inspired by the Mods of the 1960s. A difficult challenge that required both speed and technical ability, we thought they did amazingly well given the short time frame they given. If you fancy making your own (at a more leisurely pace perhaps!), I've pulled together a few of my favourite parka patterns!

The Assembly Line Hoodie Parka (Intermediate)

I love the modern look of the Assembly Line Hoodie Parka. This pattern features hidden front pockets and popper fasteners. The perfect transitional layering piece.

I Am Patterns Jacques Raincoat

If you want the classic raincoat parka look, then look no further than the I am Patterns Jacques Raincoat. This pattern also comes in men's sizes (below)!

Sew-on Jewel - Big Eye

In the transformation challenge, contestants were given a few old outfits and told to re-imagine them into country-western inspired stage outfits. They went to town on trims, stars and appliques. Recreate their looks with double denim, checks and ginghams. Ass a bit of sparkle with the Bohin Jewel Eye applique.

The made-to-measure challenge saw the contestants creating outfits inspired by David Bowie. We saw big eighties silhouettes, big sleeves and dramatic hemlines. I've picked a few patterns inspired by some of the makes on the show.

Homer + Howells Blair Blazer/Dress PDF (Intermediate)

First we have the Homer + Howells Blair Blazer/ Dress. If you were inspired by the incredible blazer dress made by Annie (that also won garment of the week!) then you will love this dress by Homer + Howells. Featuring the similar double breasted design, this pattern can be made as either a blazer or blazer dress. We love this modern take on an eighties classic!

Trend Patterns Tuck Sleeve Top PDF (Beginner)

If you loved the interesting pleated sleeves on Brogan's creation then the Trend Patterns Tuck Sleeve Blouse might be for you. A beginner friendly pattern with a V-neck and interesting seam lines and sleeve details, this could be easily made into a mini dress - perfect for parties!

Friday Pattern Company Adrianna Dress PDF (Beginner)

Another great beginner dress inspired by the party dresses on the show is the Adrianna Dress by Friday Pattern Company. A wonderful pattern with no zips or fastenings that would be perfect for silky or satin fabrics. Why not add a fringe trim to complete the Ziggy Stardust look!
