The Great British Sewing Bee - Series 8 Episode 5
Posted by Phoebe on 27th May 2022
This week on the Great British Sewing Bee, things took a spooky turn in the made-to-measure, and contestants had to get used to making more fiddly garments as it was children's week!
The first challenge was to make a child's sailor suit from a pattern. If the idea of big square collar floated your boat (excuse the pun!) but you're not keen on head-to-toe sailor dressing, then you'll love the Fibre Mood Harmony blouse from Issue 14 of the Fibre Mood magazine. The blouse features the classic square collar neckline but with a modern twist, and there are endless ways you can adapt this pattern and make it your own but using contrast fabrics and trims.

The second challenge saw the contestants re-working school uniform into fun outfits for a six-year old! We loved the creativity of the contestants in this challenge, the hoodies and dungarees were unrecognisable as school uniform and we bet any six-year old would love to wear them.
The final challenge was the made-to-measure Halloween challenge. We were blown away by the skills of the contestants in this round, there is such a high-standard of sewing this year.
Whilst I don't have any Halloween patterns to share today, I've pulled together a few of our favourite children's patterns on the website at the moment. These patterns are wonderful to sew as they are, but would also make a great place to start when planning a costume - I hope you enjoy my picks!
Pattern Paper Scissors Florrie Woven Romper (Intermediate)
We've recently added paper pattern versions of the Pattern Paper Scissor patterns to our website. One of my favourites is the Florrie Woven Romper. This pattern goes up to age 24 months and only takes 1m or less of fabric, so a great scrap buster project!
Chalk & Notch Mini Page Hoodie PDF (Beginner)
We loved the hoodies created on this week's episode and the Chalk & Notch Mini Page hoodie would be a great place to start to recreate the look. The pattern has a huge age range from 12 months to 12 years, so it's a great one to have in your collection!
Pattern Paper Scissors Lux Tee (Beginner)
Finally, another great scrap children's busting pattern is the Lux Tee. This t-shirt has an extra seam to allow you to mix and match fabrics and make even more use of your tiny scraps. A quick make, this would be a great item to gift any parent-to-be for their new addition!
I hope you enjoyed this week's round up! Check back again next week after 'Music Week' for our top pattern picks!
